Ballooning


Each October Albuquerque hosts the Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta -- the largest hot air balloon event in the world.

Events, Festivals, Fiestas, Shows


The Gathering of Nations is an annual Pow Wow, pageant and Indian Traders Market.

New Mexico State Fair is more than an annual event. Expo New Mexico, The Downs, Tingley Coliseum and the Exhibition Halls are frequent locations for special events in the heart of Albuquerque.



Monuments

Petroglyph National Monument includes more than 20,000 prehistoric and historic Native American and Hispanic petroglyphs (images carved in rock) stretching 17 miles along Albuquerque's West Mesa escarpment. Associated archeological sites provide important chapters in a 12,000 year- long story of human life in the Albuquerque area.

Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument in Mountainair the austere yet beautiful ruins of four mission churches, at Quarai, Abó, and Gran Quivira and the partially excavated pueblo of Las Humanas or, as it is known today, Gran Quivira.


Museums


The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, 2000 Mountain Road NW, (505) 242-4600 features art of the Southwest and four centuries of Rio Grande Valley history. Admission is free.

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, 2401 12th St NW (505) 843- 7270 houses a vast collection that traces the development of the culture of New Mexico's 19 Pueblos. Every weekend traditional dance performances and art demonstrations are offered free to the public. Open 7 days a week. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, 1801 Mountain Road, NW, (505) 841-2800 is where you will find dinosaurs and fossils. The museum also houses a 275 seat Dynamax Theater and the LodeStar Astronomy Center.

Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico campus, (505) 277-4404 is one of the nation's finest anthropology museums. With collections from around the world, the Maxwell is world-renowned for its collections from the southwest United States.

National Atomic Museum, 1905 Mountain Road NW, (505) 245-2137, is America's official museum of nuclear science and history. Exhibits include aircraft, nuclear medicine, robotics and nuclear weapons.

UNM Center for the Arts, also located near Central and Cornell, houses four theaters --which offer ublic performances each year. They are Popejoy Hall, Rodey Theater, Keller Hall and Theatre X. Each theater has its own individual character offering intimate theatrical productions, popular lectures, and much more.



Theater and the Arts


Albuquerque Little Theater is an active community theater with housed in a John Gaw Meem building just off Central Avenue in Albuquerque. (505) 242-4750, 224 San Pasquale SW.

Albuquerque Civic Light Opera, 4201 Ellison NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109, (505)262- 9301 Now in its 30th season, ACLOA brings the best of Broadway-style musical theater to Albuquerque. It is one of the largest producers of community musical theater in the country.

Ballet Theater of New Mexico performs a rich variety of pieces including the great 18th and 19th century classical ballets as well as contemporary masterpieces. 

New Mexico Symphony Orchestra offers concerts from Classic to Pops.

Outpost Productions offers a wide variety of music, poetry, and theater sponsoring over 100 performances a year.

Popejoy Hall on the campus at UNM hosts national touring companies and local productions throughout the year.

Wildlife, Zoos and the Outdoors


The Albuquerque Biological Park includes the Albuquerque Aquarium, the Rio Grande Botanic Garden and the Rio Grande Zoo. The Zoo is one of the best in the west with white rhinos, polar bears, African and Asian elephants, koalas, seals sea lions and lots of other animals all in naturalistic habitats. There are frequent concerts and special events at the Zoo and it's a great place to take the kids.

Rio Grande Nature Center, 2901 Candelaria NW, (505) 344-7240, is a 270 acre nature preserve in the heart of Albuquerque. The visitor center has a viewing room, exhibit area and touchable discovery room, Outside there are ponds, nature trails and native gardens. A great place to go with the kids.
