The House Financial Services Committee

The House Financial Services Committee has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to the economy, the banking system, housing, insurance, and securities and exchanges. Additionally, the Committee also has jurisdiction over monetary policy, international finance, international monetary organizations, and efforts to combat terrorist financing. The Committee oversees the Nation’s economy through its oversight of the Federal Reserve Board and individual reserve banks, the Treasury, the production and distribution of currency, and the Nation’s capital markets. Financial services issues are vitally important to Georgia, which is home to more banks than any other southern state.

Within the Peach State lies sixty percent of the nation’s financial technology companies and seventy percent of the nation’s transaction processing, along with strong insurance, retail, securities, and housing industries. Rep. Loudermilk brings a unique background and perspective to the committee as an IT professional, a former small business owner, and a veteran.

Agencies under oversight by the Committee include: the Federal Reserve, Treasury, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the National Credit Union Administration, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and the Export-Import Bank.

o Jurisdiction over banks and their regulatory agencies (OCC, Federal Reserve, FDIC)

Other Committee Functions

Election Reform

The Committee's jurisdiction over federal elections requires it to consider proposals to amend federal election law and to monitor congressional elections across the United States. The Committee was instrumental in the passage of the Help America Vote Act of 2002, which former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter called the most meaningful improvement in election laws and voting safeguards in a generation. This law provided more than $3 billion dollars for the upgrades of voting equipment and procedures to make the voting process more accessible and to guard against fraud.

House Operations

House Administration manages the daily operations that keep the House of Representatives running smoothly. The budget authorizations for expenses of House committees, and those for expenses of Members of Congress, are set by the Committee. Additionally, the Committee is responsible for oversight of House officers, including the administrative and technical functions of the House.

House Oversight

The Committee oversees the management of the Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution (including the National Zoo), Chief Administrative Officer, Clerk of the House, Sergeant at Arms, House Inspector General, United States Capitol Police, Government Publishing Office, Architect of the Capitol, and the Office of Congressional Accessibility Services

Capitol Security

The security of the Capitol Complex has become an even higher priority since the devastating attacks of September 11, 2001. The House Administration Committee, which oversees security on the House side of the Capitol Complex, works closely with the Capitol Police to ensure that every effort is made to keep the Capitol Complex extremely secure while maintaining accessibility for the millions of constituents who visit every year.

Science, Space, and Technology Committee

My colleagues and I are working hard to prioritize science, space, and technology initiatives that strengthen America’s economic competitiveness and reinforce our position as a worldwide leader in innovation, research and scientific discovery. The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, which I am a member of, is focused on the following areas:

·      Ensuring EPA regulations are based on sound science
·      Holding the Obama administration accountable
·      Prioritizing scientific research and ensuring taxpayer-funded research grants are of national interest
·      Maintaining American leadership in public and private space exploration
·      Promoting STEM education
·      Protecting Americans from cyber attacks

Established in 1958, the Science, Space, and Technology Committee has jurisdiction over all non-defense federal scientific research and development. The Committee has jurisdiction over programs at the following federal agencies: NASA, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, the U.S. Fire Administration, the United States Geological Survey, among others.
