Our Cover: Spring 1998

The U.S. Coast Guard "Keeper"-class coastal buoy tender USCGC Ida Lewis (WLM 551), as pictured in publicity material distributed by the builder, Marinette Marine of Wisconsin. The vessel, based at the Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, R.I., bears the name of a nineteenth-century local heroine, Idawalley Zorada Lewis of the Lighthouse Service, a predecessor of the USCG. The Coast Guard has long been an important presence not only in Newport but at the Naval War College as well, both in the student body and on the faculty. For another example of Coast Guard-Navy cooperation, see Jonathan S. Wiarda's article in this issue.
