Jon C. Porter has made community service a lifetime commitment. He is an experienced community leader who has brought his common-sense approach to Washington D.C. Currently in his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, Mr. Porter’s sense of responsibility to the citizens he serves allows him to successfully fight for the needs of Southern Nevadans.
In January of 2003, Jon Porter reached 22-years of community service when he was sworn into the United States Congress as Nevada's first Representative of the newly created Third Congressional District. Nevada's Third Congressional District is one of the most unique in the country. Ranging from the metropolitan areas of Las Vegas, to the growing suburbs of Henderson, and Lake Mead and Red Rock Canyon, Nevada's Third District is a spectacular place to live or to visit. Located entirely within Clark County, the Third District is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States.
Congressman Porter serves on the House Education and Workforce Committee. Education is a top priority for Congressman Porter while representing a congressional district with one of the fastest growing school districts in the nation. More than 15,000 students a year enter the system. Through his service on the Education and Workforce Committee, he works to make sure that Nevada's students receive their fair share of the education dollar.
Additionally, Congressman Porter serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. As a member of this important Committee, Mr. Porter works to ensure that key transportation infrastructure needs are met in fast growing Southern Nevada.
In the 109th Congress, Congressman Porter secured a seat on the House Government Reform Committee, and became Chairman of the Federal Workforce and Agency Organization Subcommittee. The Government Reform Committee’s primary purpose is to study government activities at all levels, and improve the way our government does business. The Subcommittee on Federal Workforce and Agency Organization examines issues affecting active and retired civil service employees and such matters as accountability and efficiency of the federal workforce.
Porter first held public office as a Boulder City Councilman in 1983. In 1987, he became Mayor of Boulder City. In 1994, Mr. Porter set his sights on extending his service and went from representing his community on the city council to the Nevada State Senate where he served for eight years. Among his many legislative accomplishments on the state and local level, Mr. Porter looks with the most pride at legislation that provided for long-range school construction, the preservation of Southern Nevada's environmental resources, and extending prescription drug benefits to seniors. He is now working to continue his achievements and work for Southern Nevada as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Porter began his second term on January 4, 2005.
Congressman Porter started his professional career as a small business owner with the Farmers Insurance Group. He maintained an office in Henderson, Nevada, overseeing 40 Farmers agents in Southern Nevada until he came to Congress.
Mr. Porter attributes his successes to the work ethic he learned at an early age, growing up in a family-owned business. His ability to work well with others at all levels, was enhanced during his tenure as a state senator.
Mr. Porter loves music and enjoys a variety of outdoor activities including running. In October 2003, after much training and preparation, Congressman Porter participated in and completed the annual 26-mile Marine Corps Marathon. This was a particularly special achievement for Mr. Porter who ran in honor for those who served and are still serving our great nation.
Jon Porter was born on May 16, 1955, in Humboldt, Iowa. He attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. Mr. Porter is married to Laurie Porter, a retired Henderson elementary school teacher and librarian. The Porters have two children, J. Chris and Nicole.
