Chairman Turner to Hold June 20th Hearing on Public Housing and the CRA

Washington, Jun 15 -

Poverty, Public Housing and the CRA: Have Housing and the CRA: Have Housing and Community Investment Incentives Helped Public Housing Families Achieve the American Dream?

Chairman Turner will be conducting a hearing on Tuesday, June 20th at 10:00 am in Room 2154 Rayburn HOB entitled "Poverty, Public Housing and the CRA: Have Housing and the CRA: Have Housing and Community Investment Incentives Helped Public Housing Families Achieve the American Dream?"

The purpose of this hearing is twofold. First, it will examine whether any of the self-sufficiency and poverty deconcentration initiatives of the Quality Housing and Work Responsibility Act (QHWRA) and other legislation have created incentives for public housing tenants to find and maintain employment. The first half of this memorandum will examine the success of programs similar to Job-Plus program undertaken by the Dayton Metropolitan Housing Authority and other PHAs.

Second, the hearing will review the “public policy theory” behind public housing and community investment. The Subcommittee will hear from witnesses who will discuss the importance of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) to the underlying goals of federal housing programs.
