Ranking Member, Judiciary Committee,
And Co-Sponsor Of The Fairness In Asbestos Injury Resolution Act,
On Senate’s Vote To Invoke Cloture
On The Motion To Proceed To The Asbestos Bill
February 7, 2006
On Tuesday
evening, the Senate moved forward on a bipartisan bill that would
provide much-needed relief to victims of asbestos exposure. The
Senate voted overwhelmingly to invoke cloture on a motion to proceed
to consideration of S. 852, The Fairness in Asbestos Injury
Resolution Act.
Senator
Leahy, the ranking Democratic member of the Judiciary Committee, is
a co-sponsor of the bill with Sen. Arlen Specter, the chairman of
the panel. Leahy issued the following comment in reaction to the
Senate’s vote.
“We have marshaled solid support in
clearing this crucial first step, but we are acutely aware that many
more hurdles remain. Chairman Specter and our bipartisan coalition
will continue to press forward in this effort to fairly and
effectively help the victims, families and businesses that have been
ravaged by the asbestos crisis.”
