WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin today unveiled a report -- prepared at his request -- analyzing the possible impact of President Bush's Social Security plan on working families in Maryland. The Congressman stressed that the report shows that the President’s focus on privatization and middle-class benefit cuts could seriously impact middle-class families throughout the state.

In his State of the Union Address, President Bush challenged Congress to address the long-term solvency of Social Security by ensuring solvency for a 75-year period. The proposal being discussed by Congressional Republicans does nothing to address the solvency of the program. Instead of securing the Social Security Trust Funds, the Congressional Republicans plan would divert money from the Trust Funds, furthering threatening the future benefits of all Americans.

While it serves as the primary Federal program that assists low-income elderly and disabled Americans, many of the components of the program have not been updated in decades.

Widows and widowers would be guaranteed a benefit equal to 75% of the combined benefits the couple had been receiving prior to the death of one spouse.
