The southeast part of Oregon is home to counties larger in size than many congressional districts and the region's economy is largely driven by agriculture, livestock, forest products and tourism. The area has gained national attention as a result of the devastating water crisis of 2001 in the Klamath Basin, but also by the innovative and pioneering approach Congressman Walden took in passing the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act, which designated 170,000 acres of wilderness on Steens Mountain and the first ever parcel of cow-free wilderness (100,000 of those acres). Crater Lake is Oregon's only National Park and is located in Klamath County.
