Washington, Oct 30 - U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, today highlighted legislation that he introduced that would help states to respond to negative economic growth in response to the Department of Commerce reporting that the Gross Domestic Product had declined by 0.3 percent during the third quarter of 2008.

“Six months ago it became apparent that the economy would experience a downturn, which is why I introduced a bill that would help states to respond,” Hoekstra said. “State leadership should have every opportunity to prioritize how they allocate resources during times of economic distress.”

In May he introduced a bill that would provide all states with the flexibility to direct specific transportation, education and workforce improvement federal grants to their most important priorities when the United States experiences two quarters of economic growth of less than 1 percent.

“Freeing state government from federal red tape will enable them to exercise creativity in response to the contracting economy,” Hoekstra said. “They are best positioned to determine their most pressing needs and recover from an economic downturn.”
