WASHINGTON - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding a new report by the trustees for Social Security and Medicare:
"The Trustees’ report released today shows a slight improvement in the outlook for Social Security and Medicare but also demonstrates once again that these two programs face real long-term challenges that must be addressed in a bipartisan way.
"Unfortunately the fiscally reckless policies of the last six years will make it much more difficult to tackle this important issue, while the looming retirement of the baby boom generation increases the urgency.
"Congress and the President need to put all options for addressing the challenges facing these programs on the table and work together as President Reagan and Speaker O’Neill did in 1983 to strengthen Social Security."
