Isakson, Chambliss Urge Attorney General to Investigate Allegations of Voter Fraud against ACORN

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., along with seven other senators, today sent a letter urging Attorney General Michael Mukasey to launch an immediate investigation into whether the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now, commonly known as ACORN, is engaging in criminal voting fraud across the country, promoting fraudulent registrations or criminally misusing taxpayer funds.

“I firmly believe in the democratic process and the power it gives the people through voting,” Isakson said. “These widespread allegations of voter fraud against ACORN are serious and disturbing. It is imperative that we investigate any acts of criminal activity quickly and thoroughly. We must ensure accuracy and accountability in our elections.”

“The right to vote is among our most fundamental rights as free citizens,” said Chambliss. “Recent allegations that ACORN has been engaged in practices to defraud the American public and trample on our most sacred right to choose our leaders  requires a thorough and complete investigation and prosecution, where appropriate, to the fullest extent of the law" 

ACORN and its employees have been associated in recent election cycles with cases of voting fraud and submitting fraudulent registrations. However, recent media reports indicate that ACORN-sponsored activities may already be undermining legitimacy and confidence in the current electoral process. Several states have already launched their own investigations of ACORN activity.
