Inauguration Ticket Information

Overview: Plans are underway for the Inauguration of U.S. Senator Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States at noon on January 20, 2009.

Each Member of the House and the Senate are given an allotment of the tickets for their use. It is important to note tickets will be distributed in early January 2009 to Congressional Offices.

We currently do not know how many tickets we will receive but already have had more requests than the amount of tickets we anticipate. People should not make travel plans based solely on getting tickets from our office. There are no guarantees.

Ticket request: Congressman Baird’s DC office will keep a master list of ticket requests from constituents. We are taking requests on a first-come-first served basis.

Please note: we are only taking requests from constituents who are from Washington’s 3rd Congressional district. If you are from another district or state, please contact your Representative or Senator.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) What day is the President’s Inauguration? The President-elect will be sworn in at noon on Tuesday, January 20, 2009.

2) Do I need tickets to attend the Inauguration? No. In January, Members of Congress will receive a very limited number of tickets for the U.S. Capitol Grounds and a portion of the National Mall. The remainder of the Mall will be open to the public to attend without tickets and large screen televisions will be on the Mall so that as many people as possible can hear and see this historic event.

3) How many inauguration tickets may I request? Due to the high demand for Inauguration tickets we are asking you limit your request to four tickets per family.

4) Do I have to pay for my Inauguration tickets?
No. Tickets to the 56th Inaugural Ceremonies are free of charge. Please be cautious of any website or ticket venue claiming they have swearing-in tickets. They can only be obtained through your Member of Congress.

5) When will I receive my inauguration tickets?
You may pick up your tickets in our Washington, DC office on Monday January 19th. We are located in the Rayburn House Office Building, room 2443 (4th floor).

6) How do I request tickets to the Inaugural Ball?
The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) – established after the November election – is responsible for all balls and galas hosted in honor of the newly-elected President. Numerous federal government agencies coordinate the security and planning for the events of inaugural week. We expect the President-elect to announce leadership of the 2009 PIC any day.

7) Where may I find more information about inaugural week activities? For now, general information is available at the website of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies at http://inaugural.senate.gov/.

8) My local high school would like to march in the Inaugural Parade. How may I find out more information? Requests to participate in Inauguration Day events for marching bands, marching units, mounted units, and other performers are collected by the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee. The President Inaugural Committee selects the participants from the collected requests. Further information and an application to participate may be found at the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee at http://www.jfhqncr.northcom.mil/afic/.
