Millions in Disaster Funding for Salmon Fishing Industry Finally Released
$70 million in disaster relief is finally being released to West Coast salmon fishermen, who have been hit hard by the closure of the ocean fishing season.  Congress originally approved $170 million in disaster aid in this year’s farm bill, however until today the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had only released $100 million of it. Congressman Brian Baird (D-WA-03) has been fighting for months to fix that problem.  In September he and other Northwest lawmakers sent a letter the Office of Management and Budget demanding that this remaining $70 million be released to the people who desperately need it. In total, Washington will receive about $22 million in federal disaster aid. ...more
