U.S. HOUSE SEEKS TO ADD TENNESSEE
TO TRAIL OF TEARS HISTORIC AREA

Rep. Tanner co-sponsors legislation

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives has passed a bill, co-sponsored by Congressman John Tanner, that would expand the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail through Tennessee.

"West Tennessee was an important thoroughfare for Native Americans who were forced from their homes more than 160 years ago,” Tanner said. “Although it is a sad part of our nation’s past, we should honor those who traveled the path by recognizing their historic journey.”

The Senate has not yet considered the bill, which asks the National Park Service to post more signs and historical information along the trail, Tanner said.

Tanner represents Tennessee’s 8th Congressional district in west and middle Tennessee.
