Senator Martinez, a member of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, told U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke today that any financial rescue plan approved by Congress ought to contain more oversight of Treasury’s actions and that Congress should act to address the root of the problem – the housing crisis.
Senator Mel Martinez spoke on the nation’s energy crisis. The senator discussed the need for more exploration and domestic development, conservation, increasing refinery capacity, and using new fuel technologies. The senator also debunked the myth that China is drilling for oil off the coast of Cuba.
Senator Martinez called for a suspension of the federal 18 cent a gallon gas tax between Memorial Day and Labor Day to help alleviate price pressures on fuel. In addition, the senator spoke in support of developing and using alternative and renewable sources of energy.
Senator Martinez, joined by Senate Republicans and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, urged action on the stalled U.S.-Colombia Trade Agreement. The agreement will add millions of dollars and thousands of jobs to Florida's economy.
