Improvements will strengthen Kirtland’s mission and help keep jobs in Albuquerque
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today a committee of House and Senate conferees has approved nearly $22 million in funding that she requested for several projects at Kirtland Air Force Base. Wilson has consistently worked to maintain Kirtland and keep its mission strong so that when there is another round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) in 2005, it will be in good shape and less likely to be a target for closure.
“Kirtland employs people,” said Wilson. “I will continue to work to give Kirtland the resources it needs to grow and make improvements so it can remain open and active for years to come.”
The Conference Committee approved Wilson’s request of $8.4 million for a Visiting Officer/Airman Quarters at Kirtland Air Force Base. The funding will allow the Base to construct a new dormitory for visiting airmen and officers. The existing visitor’s quarters are currently at full capacity, and a large percentage of visiting airmen must be housed in off-base contract quarters. Over 100 airmen per day are sent to contract quarters, costing the government over $3.0 million per year. During peak seasons, these off-base quarters can be up to 60 minutes away.
The Committee also approved Wilson’s request for $11 million to upgrade the munitions storage complex. This funding will allow the base to enhance safety and security measures for its munitions storage complex. The upgrade will include multiple levels of security including fencing, concrete barriers, additional perimeter lighting and intrusion detection systems.
Additionally, the Committee approved Wilson’s request of $2.5 million for the relocation of the Truman Gate. The Truman gate is the main entrance to Kirtland Air Force Base. Due to the growth and increasing responsibilities of the base, overall security measures and traffic flow issues must be improved. The new entrance will provide more convenient access, adequate parking facilities and enhanced security for the base.
Over the last four years, Wilson has made projects at Kirtland a priority, helping secure over $50 million in construction funds to keep the base in good shape. The bill is expected to come to the House floor for a final vote on Friday.
