(Washington, DC) - Early this morning, President Bush signed into law a significant extension of unemployment insurance benefits. Congressman Baron Hill lauded the decision and supported the original bill, H.R. 6867, when it was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in October.
“I believe this is a wise and timely decision,” Hill said. “Particularly during these difficult economic times, many Hoosier families need this assistance.”
The legislation provides an additional seven weeks of extended unemployment benefits in every state, plus another 13 weeks in states, like Indiana, where the unemployment rate has averaged 6 percent or higher over the most recent three months.
In early October, the House passed the bill, H.R. 6867, on an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 368-28. The benefits provided by the legislation are in addition to the 13 weeks of federally-funded extended unemployment benefits provided by Congress in June. In sum, this gives applicable Hoosier workers 33 weeks of additional assistance.
And, the legislation is fully paid for with monies saved in the federal unemployment trust funds.
To apply for unemployment aid, Southern Indiana residents are encouraged to visit their local career center. The web site http://www.servicelocator.org/ is a valuable tool to locate the nearest one-stop career center.
“Helping unemployed workers pay their mortgages, heat their homes and feed their families must be a key part of broader economic recovery legislation,” Hill said. “As always, if my office can be of assistance with this matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me.”
