Wilson Welcomes Emergency Oil Supply August 31, 2005

Congresswoman Says Release of Reserve Supply Protects Consumers
Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today welcomed the announcement that the U.S. Department of Energy is responding to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina by releasing some of the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserves. Wilson, who requested the emergency oil on Monday, applauded the decision by the administration, and said it will help protect consumers from any shortages or even higher fuel prices that could result from the disaster. Hurricane Katrina struck the nation’s Gulf-area oil refinement and production center, and has the potential to delay production or distribution of fuel in the United States. Refineries in the region have shut down and evacuated workers because of the hurricane. “Releasing some of the Strategic Petroleum Reserves is the right approach in a time of emergency,” Wilson said. “Americans should know their government has taken the steps that are available to shield them from the economic pressures a major natural disaster will cause.” Last year, the Department of Energy released about 5.4 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve after supply disruptions caused by Hurricane Ivan. In 2002, a little under 300,000 barrels were loaned in advance of Hurricane Lili. “I ask that you begin to release oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserves to alleviate any further strain on our economy,” Wilson urged in her letter Monday. “The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was set up for emergency situations. This is an emergency situation.”
