Wilson Statement on Los Alamos Contract April 30, 2003

Washington, DC—Congresswoman Heather Wilson made the following statement today on Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham’s announcement about the Los Alamos National Laboratory management contract:

“Ambassador Linton Brook’s recommendation to allow the University of California to continue to manage Los Alamos National Laboratory through the term of its current contract is the right one. Recompeting large management and operating (M&O;) contracts is disruptive and takes a minimum of 18 months. There is no need to accelerate that process.

“I have talked to Ambassador Brooks and will continue to work with him and DOE to ensure that:

Any criteria for selection in 2005 will require extensive experience managing large, diversified, world-class scientific research institutions.

Employee jobs, pay and retirement benefits will be protected.

Los Alamos continues to improve its business management practices.

The door remains open to the University of California to propose to continue to manage the laboratory after 2005 either alone or in concert with a partner which could strengthen the business management of the laboratory.

“Los Alamos National Laboratory is well known for its scientific excellence. Employees deserve business management worthy of one of the crown jewels of American science.”
