WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO), author of H.R. 810 the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act with Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE), trumpeted a study by the Genetics and Public Policy Center at Johns Hopkins University that found strong support for embryonic stem cell research across ideology, religion and political affiliation.

“It is clear from this study that Americans of virtually all faiths, politics and walks of life understand and support embryonic stem cell research. These findings suggest that the public has seriously considered the implications of this research and has embraced its potential to improve and save lives,” said Rep. DeGette. “There are not deep divisions in the American public on stem cell research, nor should there be in the Senate. This study reinforces the consensus that the Senate should move quickly and pass Castle-DeGette.”

The Genetics and Public Policy Center study, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, surveyed 2,212 people on their opinions of embryonic stem cell research between September 9 and 19, 2005. It can be found at www.dnapolicy.org
