WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement on the fall of Baghdad to American military forces:
“The apparent fall of Baghdad means that we have reached the end of the beginning of our engagement in Iraq. We should all be proud of the performance of the men and women in the American and British armed forces and we will never forget their losses or the losses of civilians and journalists during this conflict.
We must not lose sight of the goals set out by the Administration in launching this war. They included finding and removing Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction, capturing or eliminating Saddam Hussein and the Ba’ath leadership, and establishing a stable and peaceful democracy in Iraq. These tasks mark the onset of the next phase in our involvement.
The President and the nation must now focus on rebuilding Iraq, rebuilding our strained international relationships and rebuilding our own economy. There was never any doubt about a military victory. If the President does not accomplish these goals in post-war Iraq, we run a great risk of losing the peace.”
