Civil Rights

"America's story is a story of ever greater equality - of expanding inclusiveness. Thanks to all those who came before us, this nation is more free, more fair, and more equal than the nation of our forefathers. We are all a part of this story - in fact, it is up to us to write the next chapter."

- Senator Roland W. Burris

Senator Burris believes that diversity is our nation's greatest strength.  He regards it as a part of our national identity and a singular thread that binds all Americans together - not in spite of our differences, but because of them.

Ours is a history we can be proud of, but it is not a history we should be content with.  Senator Burris believes our nation's continuing march toward equality is emblematic of America's highest aspirations.  As the first African American ever elected to statewide office in Illinois, he witnessed this firsthand.  Civil rights for all is a principle that is at the very core of what it means to be American.

There is no issue that is more important than ensuring equality for all and providing opportunities for everyone to create a better life for themselves and their families.  As legislation related to these issues is considered by the Senate, he will work with his colleagues to ensure that Congressional action is guided by principles of fairness and equality.
