Federal Spending (Percentage of gross domestic product)
The figure shows federal spending as a percentage of gross domestic product from 1962 to 2082 under a scenario in CBO's long-term budget outlook. From 2007 to 2082, the percentage for Medicare and Medicaid rises from 4.1 to 18.5; and for Social Security, from 4.3 to 6.4. Other spending, excluding debt service, declines from 9.8 to 7.6.
