Washington, Sep 23, 2010 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on Senate Republican obstruction of the DISCLOSE Act:

“With today’s vote in the Senate, Republicans have ensured that Americans will be left in the dark as shadowy organizations continue to spend millions on the upcoming elections. The winners today are corporate special interests who remain free to funnel millions of dollars into groups like Americans for Job Security or 60 Plus Association to secretly fund advertising in favor of a particular agenda or against those who try to hold them accountable.

“Voters have a fundamental right to know who is trying to influence their votes, and the DISCLOSE Act would have provided that information.  If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. Unfortunately, Washington Republicans have decided to undermine voters’ rights and our electoral system so big-money special interests can continue to spend in secret.  I would like to thank my Republican colleague in the House, Congressman Mike Castle, for co-sponsoring this important legislation. I also want to commend Senator Schumer and Majority Leader Reid for their tireless work on this issue and I urge the Senate to keep bringing up this legislation until Washington Republicans get the message that our democracy is not for sale.”
