HARMAN: INDEFINITE DETENTION OF GITMO DETAINEES IS TRADING ONE BLACK EYE FOR ANOTHER

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Jane Harman, Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence, today told ABC News Correspondent Jake Tapper that a Justice Department task force’s recommendation to indefinitely detain nearly 50 Guantanamo detainees would be a mistake. Harman said the United States would be “trading one black eye, the stain of Guantanamo, for a new black eye, and that would be the stain of preventive detention in the United States of America.”

In the podcast interview, Harman described the detention facility as “an indelible stain” and a potent recruiting tool for al-Qaeda. But she cautioned that using the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force and the laws of war to hold suspects indefinitely without trial would provide terrorist recruiters with an equally powerful message.

“We have to live our values,” said Harman. “That is how we are going to win the argument [with al-Qaeda]—provide an alternative narrative about why the U.S. stands for the rule of law.”
