Make It In America: Touring a Family-Owned Business in San Francisco
On Wednesday, I had the privilege of touring the McRoskey Mattress Company, a family-owned business that has been manufacturing mattresses in San Francisco since 1899. Robin Azevedo, owner and granddaughter of McRoskey’s founder, spoke eloquently about how her family business directly translates to local jobs, which means helping families in our community.

Stories like Robin’s have led the Democratic Congress to work to empower business owners, strengthen the hand of manufacturing, and extend opportunities to our workers. In recent months, we have made “Make It in America” our rallying call. It is the strategy that insists on a thriving manufacturing center as the cornerstone of a growing economy. Because when we “Make It in America,” our people can make it in America.

Congress has already passed legislation to close tax loopholes that encourage businesses to ship jobs overseas, help small businesses access much needed capital, and protect American patents that are critical to innovation and economic growth. I was so pleased to hear that Robin took advantage of a provision in the Small Business Jobs Act, signed into law this September, that increases the amount of investments that businesses are eligible to immediately write off. Because of this tax cut, she chose to buy a new oven – made in America – for her business.

With Congress taking the lead and with business owners like Robin working at the ground level, we can keep America going forward. San Francisco has always led the way in economic growth and innovation, and we will build on that legacy and leadership now and into the future.
