Congressman Baird Announces $51,300 Grant for Clark County Firefighters (December 19, 2003)

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Brian Baird today announced a new grant for Clark County Fire Protection District 9. Clark County Fire District 9 will receive a grant of $51,300 to design and build a ‘burn tower’, a structure used in firefighter training to simulate emergency fire situations.  The grant is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) $750 million Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program for FY 2003.
“It’s great to hear our local firefighters will benefit from this assistance,” said Rep. Baird. “This grant will help them further their training and coordination, improving their ability to safeguard our communities.”

The AFG program supports departments by providing them with the resources necessary to protect the public and their firefighters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) received approximately 19,950 applications for the 2003 grant program. Grant applicants were required to demonstrate financial need and explain the benefits expected from grant funding.

“This is a great opportunity to enhance training facilities for our firefighters and cadet program,” said Scott Koehler, Chief of Clark County Fire Districts 9 and 1.  “We intend to share this facility with surrounding fire districts as well, to help provide the best service possible to our community.”
