Washington, D.C.—The top Republicans on the Armed Service Committee and the Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel today called for vigorous Congressional oversight of the Department of Defense's newly-released "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" report and urged Democratic Congressional leaders to delay any attempts to repeal the law until Congress can hold hearings on the Pentagon’s recommendations.  Members and staff of the committee were briefed earlier today on the Pentagon's “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” report by Department of Defense General Counsel Jeh Johnson and U.S. Army Europe Commanding Officer General Carter Ham, who were tapped by Secretary of Defense Gates to lead the review.

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding the latest release of sensitive U.S. government documents by Wikileaks:              

“This release of sensitive Department of State documents is the latest attempt to undermine American power and influence by sowing seeds of mistrust amongst the United States and its allies, but it will not work.

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement condemning North Korea’s artillery attack against South Korea:

“I join with my colleagues in Congress and the Administration to condemn North Korea’s unprovoked attack on the Republic of Korea.  This latest act of aggression by the North Korean regime is a deliberate escalation of an already tense situation.  The United States and the international community, including China, has a responsibility to do all it can to support South Korea in the face of this latest belligerence from the north.”

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding the verdict delivered in the Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani terrorism case:

“Today’s verdict is a blow to the Administration’s failed terrorist detention and prosecution programs, which are not guided by the law of armed conflict as they should be. While the Administration continues to grasp at the hope that trying terrorists in civilian courts will improve our standing in the international community, Congress has already provided the Administration with a bipartisan system to try terrorists in military commissions.
