Rep. Slaughter Presents Purple Heart to Niagara Falls Korean War Vet
Slaughter Assisted Anthony Bruno in Obtaining Military Award That Has Been Owed to Him for Decades
Niagara Falls, NY - Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Rules, today presented Anthony Bruno of Niagara Falls with a Purple Heart military decoration that has been owed to him for decades.
Mr. Bruno sustained a lower body wound during combat in Korea in 1953. As such, his service warrants a Purple Heart.
"The brave men and women that fight for us overseas deserve the thanks of our nation and recognition for their sacrifice," said Rep. Slaughter. "I am proud to have assisted Mr. Bruno in cutting red tape at the Army and am pleased to present him with his award today."
After years of working with the Army to obtain his decoration, Mr. Bruno contacted Rep. Slaughter's office for assistance in February 2009. Rep. Slaughter quickly contacted the Army on Mr. Bruno's behalf. Shortly thereafter, the Army awarded Mr. Bruno his Purple Heart and today Rep. Slaughter presented Mr. Bruno with the award that has been owed to him for years.
BACKGROUND
A Purple Heart is a military decoration awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of an Armed Force who, while serving with the U.S. Armed Services after 5 April 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded.
