Subcommittee Holds Hearing to Press Forward on Federal Hiring Reform

Hearing will discuss recent hiring initiatives and efforts to improve federal recruitment

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in room 2154 of the Rayburn House Office Building, the Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, Postal Service, and the District of Columbia will hold a federal workforce oversight hearing entitled, “Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: Transforming Federal Hiring.”

In particular, the hearing will examine recent regulatory changes to federal hiring practices, including the use of shared registers, upgrades to the USAJOBS website, and the implementation of the Veterans’ Employment Initiative. Additionally, the hearing will discuss the Executive Memorandum on federal recruitment and hiring practices issued by President Obama in May of 2010, as well as pending legislative proposals related to federal hiring.

“At a time when we are facing numerous and complex challenges as a nation, it is imperative that the federal government be able to attract and recruit a diverse set of highly-capable individuals to perform critical public service jobs,” said Chairman Stephen F. Lynch. “To this end, we must examine and address any outstanding weaknesses in our federal hiring system to ensure that the federal government is well-placed to recruit our nation's veterans and students.”

The Subcommittee is eager to hear various viewpoints on how to craft consequential hiring reform to maintain America's long-standing commitments to veterans and to a merit-based hiring system.

Witness testimonies, the Chairman’s opening statement, and a 2:00 p.m. live broadcast of the hearing can be found on the Subcommittee’s website, www.federalworkforce.oversight.house.gov
