Upper San Pedro Water Resource Management - Upper San Pedro Partnership, 2160 E. Fry Boulevard, Ste. C-5, PMB# 411, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635, $300,000, USDA-ARS: This project is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because achieving a sustainable yield of regional aquifer is essential to ensuring that a long-term water supply is available to the City of Sierra Vista, the U.S. Army’s Fort Huachuca and the San Pedro River itself, which is one of the most diverse ecosystems in North America. Changing rainfall trends in the desert southwest are placing increasing stress on water supply in the area. The mission of the Upper San Pedro Partnership is to coordinate and cooperate in the identification, prioritization and implementation of comprehensive policies and projects to assist in meeting water needs in the Sierra Vista Subwatershed of the Upper San Pedro River Basin. Funding will be used to research new strategies for maximizing rainfall-runoff potential and enhancing aquifer recharge in order to meet the future water supply needs of Southern Arizona under a changing climate.
