H.R. 4098, the “Secure Federal File Sharing Act”, was introduced by Chairman Towns on November 17, 2009. The bill directs the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to issue new guidance to prohibit the use of open network peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing software on all federal computers, computer systems, and networks, including those of contractors working on the government’s behalf. H.R. 4098 would help prevent the inadvertent sharing of federal documents on P2P networks.
