Chairman Towns' Statement on National Archives Security Breach PDF Print

U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, today released the following statement upon learning of a security breach at the National Archives facility near Washington, DC, involving Clinton administration documents. Earlier today, the National Archives and Records Administration Inspector General (IG) briefed Committee staff on their ongoing investigation into the loss of this sensitive information. The Chairman also learned that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is conducting a criminal investigation into the matter.

“I am deeply concerned about this serious security breach at the National Archives. Therefore, I will hold separate Members’ briefings on ongoing investigations into this matter with the National Archives Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation so Committee Members can begin to understand the magnitude of the security breach and all of the steps being taken to recover the lost information. The Committee will do everything possible to protect the integrity of the FBI’s criminal investigation while we fulfill our Constitutional duty to investigate the compromised security protocols at the National Archives and work to prevent future incidents.”
