Chairman Towns Announces Senior Oversight Staff

Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), incoming Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, named Ronald Stroman as staff director and Michael McCarthy as deputy staff director of the committee.

“The current financial crisis demonstrates that fundamental aspects of the federal government are broken and in need of sustained oversight and significant reform. I look forward to establishing a strong bipartisan committee agenda that will improve the lives of the American people. Ronald Stroman and Michael McCarthy are experienced oversight staffers who will provide continuity and help me implement an aggressive agenda,” Rep. Towns said.

Ronald A. Stroman has more than 25 years of experience on government oversight issues. Stroman will rejoin the committee where he served as general counsel to the full committee from 1988-1994, staff director and chief counsel to the Subcommittee on Human Resources and Intergovernmental Relations from 1993-1994, and deputy minority staff director and procurement counsel from 1995-1997. He also served as assistant counsel on the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice of the Committee on the Judiciary from 1984-1988. Since 2001, Stroman has been a managing director at the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress. He holds a law degree from Rutgers University.

Michael T. McCarthy was staff director and chief counsel to the Subcommittee on Government Management, Organization, and Procurement, which Towns chaired in the 110th Congress. Previously, McCarthy served as minority counsel to Rep. Henry Waxman for the committee’s investigations on Iraq contracting and the Hurricane Katrina response. He has worked in all three branches of the federal government, with executive branch service at the Justice Department, Labor Department, and National Archives, and as law clerk to U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema. McCarthy is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
