Oversight Committee to Examine the Implementation of Iran Sanctions

Washington – Chairman Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY) is convening a hearing on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. entitled, “Implementation of Iran Sanctions.” The hearing will examine the implementation of Iran sanctions, including efforts to discourage companies from doing business with Iran as long as Iran continues to work on developing nuclear weapons and supports terrorism.

“For United States sanctions to be successful, they must be fully implemented and enforced,” said Chairman Towns. “We need to ensure that companies who receive Federal government contracts are not doing business with Iran.  I look forward to hearing how we can achieve this critical goal.”

“I want to thank Chairman Towns for holding this hearing,” U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Oversight Committee member, said. “It's promising that just weeks after becoming law, news reports suggest that the sanctions have increased Iran’s international isolation and weakened its economy. But Iran is on a fast path toward achieving nuclear weapons capability, and we must do all we can to prevent that. This hearing will help us understand if the current law, the U.N. sanctions, and the E.U. sanctions are enough to achieve that vital goal.”

The hearing will take place at 10:00 a.m. in room 2154 Rayburn House Office Building.

The witnesses invited to testify include:

Mr. Robert J. Einhorn
Special Advisor for Nonproliferation and Arms Control
U.S. Department of State
