Mark's Newsletter Update: Giving Thanks

Posted: Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Dear Fellow Coloradan,

[ image removed in text-only mode ]The twin strains of lengthy wars and our country's climb out of an economic hole can make for trying times, but family reminds us of the ideals worth fighting for.

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful to have my family around me and am mindful that many of our military families will not share that blessing this year, and so I salute our troops who are risking their lives far from home. You and your families have sacrificed greatly for our country's security and our people's freedom. My prayers are with you, hoping you stay safe this holiday season until you reunite with your loved ones.  As a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, I will always strive to make sure we honor your service by taking care of you and your families both abroad and at home.

As many of you know, my family lost its patriarch in March this year: my Uncle Stewart. As U.S. Secretary of the Interior, he was a tireless defender of the environment, a legacy I have tried to emulate in my own work in the U.S. Congress. Though Uncle Stewart's absence will be keenly felt this Thanksgiving, I know that his example will be a guiding light for generations to come.

Thanksgiving has traditionally been a time for food and family. Although I know celebrations will be bittersweet for some Colorado families whose dinner tables are emptier than last year's, including my own, we can all find things for which to be thankful. So whether you are enjoying your turkey dinner stateside or thousands of miles away, know that you're in our thoughts.

Happy Thanksgiving!
