European Parliament Members Request Kanjorski's Presence at Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue in Central Europe

WASHINGTON - Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (PA-11), Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises announced that, at the request of Members of the European Parliament, he will join American Members of Congress and European Members of Parliament to discuss the global economic crisis at the annual EU-US summit conducted by the Transatlantic Legislators Dialogue.  Over the last several years, Chairman Kanjorski has developed a particularly strong working relationship with Peter Skinner, a European Parliament Member from England who chairs the European Parliamentary Insurance Caucus and the European Parliamentary Financial Services Forum.  He specifically requested that Chairman Kanjorski attend the summit to brief American and European legislators of our plans to reform the regulatory structure for financial institutions, and hopefully calm the current financial crisis.

"One of the major points that we have realized during this economic crisis, is that the American economy is intricately connected to foreign economies, and vice versa," said Chairman Kanjorski.  "We must work together to turn the tide of the economic crisis, as our current financial problems are larger than just our economy alone.  This summit will help to open the dialogue with key legislators from other countries so that we can work together, and more effectively help the people struggling in the U.S. and globally.  I look forward to the dialogue with my European colleagues and I thank Mr. Skinner for reaching out to me."

Mr. Skinner requested Chairman Kanjorski's attendance as a result of the Chairman's leadership on the House Financial Services Committee, his work in Congress to address the economic crisis, and his efforts to reform the regulatory structure of the financial services industry.  Chairman Kanjorski has already held two hearings addressing regulatory reform in this Congress, and many others in the previous Congress.

The Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue was established by the Transatlantic Declaration of 1990 and holds annual EU-US summit meetings.  For security purposes, the exact time and location of the meeting will not be disclosed in advance.  More information about the organization can be found at here.

Most recently, Mr. Skinner met with Chairman Kanjorski in Washington, D.C. on April 1, to discuss the international implications of the regulation of financial institutions.  Ironically, Mr. Skinner is married to a native of Chairman Kanjorski's district, the former Kimberly Strycharz of Scranton.
