I congratulate my colleagues in the House and Senate for working quickly to resolve their differences over this crucial piece of economic recovery legislation. Tonight I will be reviewing the details of the compromise version.
Few issues are more important to my constituents in Southern Arizona and most Americans than the dire state of our nation's economy. The hard-working men and women I represent want action - they want their federal government to do what is necessary to create jobs, help small businesses and promote long-term prosperity.
The purpose of this legislation must be to achieve these goals while laying the foundation for a stable U.S. economy. Taxpayers need to get a return on their investment.
Yesterday I was among a group of fiscally conservative members who met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the need for economic reform, including ways to balance the budget and enact long-overdue accountability measures. Our nation is in desperate need of a comprehensive and transparent plan to restore our nation's fiscal health. Solving the current economic crisis and getting our fiscal house in order is not an either or proposition. We can and we must do both.
