Bill will extend critical tax credits for businesses, utilities and homeowners
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Friday, Oct. 12 will announce new solar energy legislation aimed at extending critical tax credits for businesses, public utilities and homeowners.
Giffords, a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, is introducing the Renewable Energy Assistance Act in direct response to the work of her Solar Energy Advisory Council. In its report, "Solar Energy in Southern Arizona," the council recommended extending the 30 percent investment tax credit through 2016 and removing the limitation that prevents public utilities from claiming the investment tax credit.
Giffords’ bill meets those recommendations and also will remove the caps on credit for energy-efficient homes, modify and extend the energy-efficient appliance credit, and extend the non-business energy property credit.

The Renewable Energy Assistance Act is the second solar energy bill introduced by the Tucson lawmaker. Her Solar Energy Research and Advancement Act of 2007 was approved by the House of Representatives on Aug. 4 as part of a comprehensive package of legislation aimed at stopping global warming and reducing American dependence on foreign oil.
Joining Giffords on Friday will be Paul Parisi, vice president for government relations at the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce; Lee Smith, senior vice president for business development at TREO; and Gary Jones, co-director of the Arizona Research Institute for Solar Energy. Each will address the importance of solar and renewable energy to the growth and development of our region and state.
