  • November 10, 2010Hoyer Urges Soldiers Affected by Stop Loss to Collect Retroactive Pay Before New Deadline

    Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) reminded service members whose service was extended under stop loss orders in Iraq and Afghanistan that they have untilDecember 3, 2010 to apply for retroactive pay. Troops eligible for retroactive pay will receive $500 a month for each month their service was extended. The Department of Defense estimates that 145,400 troops are eligible, and the Services have paid out 67,000 claims for a total of $251 million.  Eligible personnel can go to www.defense.gov/stoploss for more information, or to submit a claim.

  • July 29, 2010Hoyer Announces Investments in Southern Maryland Transportation & Community Development

    Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) announced that the Fiscal Year 2011 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill approved tonight by the House contains significant investments to upgrade major transportation routes and transit projects while addressing community development needs in Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District.  The funds were included at the request of Congressman Hoyer.

  • July 28, 2010Hoyer Statement on NTSB Report on 2009 Red Line Accident

      Today, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued the findings of its investigation of the June 22, 2009, accident involving the collision of two Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) trains that killed 9 people and injured nearly 80 others on the Red Line in Washington, D.C.  NTSB determined that the probable cause of the accident was a malfunctioning of track circuits as well as Metro's failure to take appropriate measures to identify and prevent that problem.

  • July 28, 2010Hoyer Announces Investments in Southern Maryland Military Facilities

    Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) announced that the Fiscal Year 2011  Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act approved today by the House contains significant investments for projects and programs that will benefit military facilities in Southern Maryland.  Funding will go to the  Naval Air Station (NAS), Patuxent River, and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Indian Head, MD, for needed facility upgrades and additions that will not only enhance our nation’s defense capabilities, but also provide for Southern Maryland’s  continued economic growth.

Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement after the Obama Administration announced new regulations that give consumers in new health plans the right to appeal decisions, including claims denials and rescissions, made by their health plans.  This is a provision made available by the Affordable Care Act and part of the Act’s critically important Patient’s Bill of Rights.

  • July 21, 2010Hoyer Announces DOE Partnership with NAHB Research Center in Upper Marlboro, MD

    The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced 15 research and deployment partnerships to help improve the energy efficiency of American homes, including a partnership with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center in Upper Marlboro, MD.  Leveraging their industry expertise, NAHB will provide technical assistance to retrofit projects to support DOE’s energy efficiency retrofit programs, building on the Department’s efforts to make cost-effective energy efficiency retrofits more easily accessible to hundreds of thousands of American homes and businesses.

  • July 15, 2010Hoyer Announces $121,445 in Grant Funding for Maryland Agricultural Marketing Projects

     Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced two awards for Maryland totaling $121,445, to support agricultural market research and demonstration projects. These grants were part of $1.3 million in 22 matching grants awarded to 18 states to explore new and innovative approaches to marketing U.S. food and agricultural products and to improve the efficiency and performance of the marketing system.

  • July 14, 2010UMD Receives $500,000 Federal Recovery Act Grant to Help Lower Home Cooling Costs

    The U.S. Department of Energy announced the award of a $500,000 research grant for the University of Maryland to develop energy efficient cooling technologies and air conditioners (AC) this week. The grant was part of a $100 million nationwide series of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants to support alternative methods to help save energy and reduce green house gas emissions.  Through this funding, UMD researchers will continue their efforts to replace the conventional compression technology now used in nearly every home and business.

  • July 14, 2010Hoyer Supports Telework Improvements Act

    Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) voted today in support of the Telework Improvements Act, legislation requiring Federal agencies to establish a policy to authorize employees to telework.  Providing Federal employees the option to telework will promote the conservation of gasoline, reduce congestion, lower commuting costs, help them balance work and family, and provide an alternative means to work when outside forces like weather prevent a normal commute.

  • July 14, 2010Reps. Hoyer & Edwards Announce $3,458,682 Grant Award to Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department

    Congressman Steny Hoyer (MD-5) and Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4), announced today that the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department will receive a $3,458,682 grant through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program (SAFER).  This funding will be utilized by the County to hire an additional 24 firefighters.

    Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today attended events highlighting the Summer Food Service Program in Charles County, MD. Before attending a briefing by partners on the collaborative program in Charles County, Hoyer met with children served by a mobile unit which delivers meals to a number of Summer Food Service Program sites in the county. He then traveled to Somers Middle School where he ate lunch with students participating in the program.
