On Friday, August 27, Sheldon participated in a walking tour of small businesses in Warwick to hear from business owners about how the tough economy has affected them, and about what they need to succeed and grow.
Rhode Island Health Care Stakeholders Meeting »
On July 14, Sheldon invited doctors, physicians, and other health care stakeholders from Rhode Island to Washington, D.C. to learn more about the Health Care Reform Bill and how it will affect Rhode Islanders. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, White House Health Reform Director Nancy-Ann DeParle, and Senator Chris Dodd gave inspiring keynote addresses, while many other panelists and leaders participated to make the event a resounding success.
Sheldon visits with Weekapaug Foundation for Conservation and local lobster fishermen »
On July 9th, Sheldon toured Quonnie Pound with Dr. John King, a professor at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography, who is working with the Weekapaug Foundation for Conservation to monitor the health of the pound and the surrounding shoreline. Sheldon also met with local lobster fishermen in Galilee to observe the workings of a lobster fishing vessel.
Sheldon Introduces National Endowment for the Oceans »
During a press conference at Save The Bay in Providence, Sheldon introduced legislation to create a National Endowment for the Oceans. This legislation would help fund projects to protect and restore oceans and coastal areas. After the press conference, Sheldon joined Save The Bay Narragansett Baykeeper John Torgan for a short boat tour to measure oxygen levels on the ocean floor.

On June 16, Sheldon invited clean energy and environmental protection leaders from Rhode Island to Washington, D.C. to learn more about key federal programs that can support their efforts. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Senator John Kerry, White House CEQ Chair Nancy Sutley, and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson gave inspiring keynote addresses, while many other panelists and leaders participated to make the event a resounding success.
Whitehouse Visits Local Train Station Benefitting from ARRA Funds »
On Friday, June 11th, Sheldon toured the Kingston Train Station to hear how federal funds are being used to expand Rhode Island’s transportation infrastructure. Sheldon was joined by RI DOT director Michael Lewis and learned about plans to begin preliminary environmental and engineering studies for work on potential track upgrades and the construction of a second station platform. The studies will be funded by $1.2 million from the ARRA.

Gulf Spill Flyover »
On Monday, May 24th, Senator Whitehouse traveled to Louisiana to inspect the response to the BP oil spill. Accompanied by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and a bipartisan Senate delegation, Sheldon conducted a flyover of the affected areas and discussed the latest resources along the Gulf Coast. Sheldon met with Don Cheadle, the award-winning actor and producer, and the Pew Environment Group, to discuss Cheadle’s work in international conservation and ways to create a stronger involvement in global natural resource and biodiversity conservation.
