California Supreme Court Ruling on Proposition 8
May 26th, 2009 by KarinaThe San Francisco Chronicle reports that the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8:
Court upholds Prop. 8 but lets marriages stand
Bob Egelko, San Francisco Chronicle, 5/26/09California voters legally outlawed same-sex marriage when they approved Proposition 8 in November, but the constitutional amendment did not dissolve the unions of 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who wed before the measure took effect, the state Supreme Court ruled today.
The 6-1 decision was issued by the same court that declared a year ago that a state law defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman violated the right to choose one’s spouse and discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation.
Speaker Pelosi on the ruling:
Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court in support of Proposition 8 is deeply disappointing because this ballot initiative takes away individual rights.
I have long fought for equality for all of California’s families and will strongly support efforts to restore marriage equality in California, so it can join the ranks of states such as Iowa and Vermont.
