Tucson lawmaker will seek views of parents, students, educators and community leaders prior to congressional debate on reauthorization
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords announced today that she will hold two education summit meetings on the No Child Left Behind Act.
Speaking to an assembly at Hendricks Elementary School, the Tucson lawmaker said she wants to hear from the people most affected by the act before voting on its reauthorization.
The No Child Left Behind Act was enacted in 2001 with the goal of improving school performance. Its many provisions include a requirement that schools test students annually in reading and math, and the imposition of penalties if schools fail to reach state-established proficiency targets. If Congress wants to change the law, it must do so before it expires on Sept. 30, 2007.
At the 90-minute summit meetings, Giffords will be joined by a panel of experts that will include parents, students, teachers, school board members, and community leaders. The public is invited to attend and participate.
The first summit meeting will be held in Tucson on Saturday, March 10 at the Little Theater at Rincon High School, 422 N. Arcadia Ave. It begins at 9:30 a.m.
The second summit meeting will be held in Sierra Vista on Saturday, March 24 in the Drama Pod at Buena High School, 5225 E. Buena School Blvd. It begins at 3 p.m.
