Day-long visit includes “Congress on Your Corner” and “Education Summit”
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will host a pair of back-to-back public forums in Sierra Vista on Saturday, March 24.
Giffords' day begins at 11:30 a.m. with a two-hour “Congress on Your Corner” event at Safeway. This is an opportunity for constituents to meet with the congresswoman and her staff to discuss any issue concerning the federal government.
At 3 p.m. Giffords will host an “Education Summit” at Buena High School. This event will focus on the No Child Left Behind Act, the federal education law enacted in 2001 with the goal of improving school performance. Its many provisions include a requirement that schools test students annually in reading and math, and the imposition of penalties if schools fail to reach state-established proficiency targets. If Congress wants to change the law, it must do so before it expires on Sept. 30, 2007.
Giffords hopes to hear from the people most affected by the act before the congressional debate on its reauthorization. She will be joined by a panel of experts that will include parents, students, teachers, school board members, and community leaders. The public is invited to attend and participate.
