Tucson lawmaker also will attend first public hearing on the proposed Rosemont copper mine
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Monday will comment publicly for the first time on her recent trip to Afghanistan when she meets with the families of service members stationed in the war-torn country.
The Tucson lawmaker, a member of the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees, returned from a bipartisan congressional delegation trip to Afghanistan on April 29.
The four-day trip included visits to Kabul, Kandahar and Bagram, and meetings with top United States and Afghan civilian and military officials. The five-member delegation also visited Karachi, Pakistan, where they met with President Pervez Musharraf.
At Monday's meeting, Giffords also will provide an update on legislation concerning active duty service members, their families and veterans.
After the meeting with families, Giffords will travel to the small community of Elgin to attend and speak at the first public hearing on the proposed Rosemont copper mine. At the congresswoman's insistence, the U.S. Forest Service recently decided to allow the public more time to comment on the mine.
