GREGG COMMENTS ON THE RELEASE OF AUNG SAN SUU KYI FROM HOUSE ARREST IN BURMA

WASHINGTON – Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, today issued the following statement on the release of Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest in Burma.
"The release of Aung San Suu Kyi after more than seven years of house arrest is certainly welcome news. Suu Kyi is more than just the leading voice for democracy in Burma; she is a source of inspiration for advocates and political prisoners worldwide.
"While I am heartened that Suu Kyi has been released, it remains to be seen whether she will have unrestricted freedom of movement and speech, and the freedom to participate fully in Burma's political process, which continues to be a complete charade. We cannot let the good news about Suu Kyi deter us from continuing to hold the military junta accountable for the their vicious efforts to undermine democratic values and voices of freedom in Burma.
"The U.S expects the military regime to dramatically expand political participation and create an environment free from fear and intimidation before we will consider any elections, including those held earlier this month, as anything but a farce."
