The 20-year Buffalo Bayou and Beyond Master Plan calls for significant transit, intermodal and pedestrian-related improvements along the Buffalo Bayou Greenway. A key location for these improvements is the Allen Parkway/Memorial Drive corridor. This corridor, which serves as a major thoroughfare into downtown Houston, is experiencing extensive growth with major residential, commercial, and mixed-use development. As a result, Buffalo Bayou is experiencing increased utilization. 2011 Appropriation funding is being requested to implement several important pedestrian access and safety improvements in the corridor. All the projects promote smart growth, sustainable development, and intermodality. A federal Appropriation will be leveraged with nearly $50 million in private and public funds that have already been secured through private philanthropists and Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Texas Department of Transportation, City of Houston and Harris County Flood Control District.
