Congressman secures seats on the Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism and the Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittees

January 17, 2007

Washington, D.C.
- Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis (FL-09) issued the following statement today regarding his selection of two important Subcommittees on the House Homeland Security Committee: the Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism Subcommittee and the Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittee.

"It has been over five years since the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and Americans are rightly concerned about the security of our country," Bilirakis said.  "Although we have strengthened our safety and security since then, we must work on a bipartisan basis to make America as safe as possible.  That is exactly what I plan to do."

The Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism Subcommittee has jurisdiction over border security and immigration enforcement, as well as port and maritime protection.  The Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the safety and security of our nation's transportation systems and critical infrastructure and assets.

Bilirakis said he sought the seats on the two Subcommittees to "strengthen the safety of America's ports, secure our borders, and protect our critical infrastructure."
