King Supports Reported U.S. Prosecution Efforts of WikiLeaks Founder Following Latest Release of Classified Documents

(Sunday, November 28, 2010) — Today, ¬U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, expressed support for Attorney General Eric Holder in his reported planned prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange under the Espionage Act.  In a letter to Holder, King wrote that the latest release by WikiLeaks of classified documents “manifests Mr. Assange’s purposeful intent to damage not only our national interests in fighting the war on terror, but also undermines the very safety of coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

King also praised Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s diplomatic efforts in this matter, and in a separate letter to Clinton, King urged her to designate WikiLeaks as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.  In the letter to Clinton, King wrote that “WikiLeaks presents a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States.  I strongly urge you to work within the Administration to use every offensive capability of the U.S. government to prevent further damaging releases by WikiLeaks.”
