How much calcium and vitamin D do you need? The IOM has the answer!

The House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday that would give food in schools a nutritional overhaul. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 contains a number of recommendations from an IOM report released last fall.

This week the Environmental Protection Agency celebrates 40 years of protecting the environment and human health. At the request of the EPA, the IOM is examining the relationship between climate change and the air we breathe at home, at work, and at school.

The Senate passed a bill this week that gives the FDA more power to prevent outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. These changes are in line with a recent IOM report, which recommends that the FDA focus on preventing problems from occurring, in order to save lives.

An estimated 70 million people will be living with HIV/AIDS in 2050, most of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. The IOM recommends that African nations, in coordination with the U.S. and other donor nations, prepare now to confront the long-term burden of HIV/AIDS.
